Grid Modernization: Utility Experiences

In this opening panel, utility executives from Illinois, Ohio and New York will discuss their grid modernization strategy, plans, and execution challenges in light of their respective state regulation/rate structure, risk profile and utility culture. The session will provide a spectrum of perspectives on the cycle of investment in grid mod, and alternative regulatory drivers.

Joseph Svachula

As Vice President of Smart Grid and Technology at ComEd, Joseph Svachula has a key role in developing the strategic direction for Smart Grid technologies, not only at ComEd, but in collaboration across Exelon Utilities so that customers fully experience the benefits that this technology promises.
Prior to his current role, he served as Vice President of Distribution System Operations and Vice President of Field Operations. He began his professional career at ComEd in 1988 in a variety of testing engineer positions and has more than 25 years of utility industry experience, including key manager positions in Transmission & Substations, Work Management, Distribution Operations, Operational Strategy & Business Intelligence, and Customer Operations Strategies & Support.
Joseph serves on the Board of Directors for Chicago Special Olympics and Special Children's Charities. He is currently serving as the co-chairman of the 2014 IEEE T&D Conference in Chicago. He is the past president of the St. John Brebeuf Athletic Board, a parochial grammar school in Niles, Illinois, and volunteers for various special recreation activities in his community.
Joseph holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois Chicago and a Master of Engineering Management from Northwestern University.
Joe Bentley

Joe Bentley leads the Transmission & Distribution and Customer Services organizations for AES' United States Strategic Business Unit (SBU) that includes subsidiaries in Indianapolis, Indiana and Dayton, Ohio. Joe was also a Senior Investment Associate with IPALCO Enterprises and Principal with EnerTech Capital Partners, a venture capital firm in Wayne, Pennsylvania focused on early stage venture investments in energy and telecommunications. Joe received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University in 1988. He has also taken advanced executive education courses at the University of Michigan and the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia.
Joe is a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors for the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, a member of the Indiana University Purdue University of Indianapolis (IUPUI) Dean's Industry Advisory Council and on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the Midwest Energy Association. He and his family reside in Plainfield, Indiana.
Matthew Glasser

Matthew is a Director in the Utility of the Future team at the Consolidated Edison Company of New York (Con Edison). Matt is responsible for policy issues associated with New York's Reforming the Energy Vision(REV) proceeding. Prior to joining the Utility of the Future team, Matthew was a Department Manager for Energy Services in Manhattan where he lead a team that was responsible for project managing electric and gas service installations in Manhattan.
Matthew has 20 years of experience with Con Edison in various capacities in departments ranging from electric construction, distribution engineering, control center operations and power generation. Matthew holds a bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and an MBA from St. John's University.
David W. South

David South devises innovative business solutions and strategies for clients challenged by the interaction among technologies (power generation, energy efficiency, process and environmental), commodity and financial markets, and regulatory requirements related to energy, emissions/residuals and sustainability. He has worked with numerous companies in the power generation, industrial/manufacturing, financial, technology development, and transportation sectors, as well as public-sector organizations such as trade associations, research institutions, and government agencies at the local, state and federal levels.
David combines substantial business consulting experience with deep resource, technology and delivery infrastructure experience includes coal, natural gas, nuclear power, distributed/on-site, cogeneration, renewable/clean energy and clean fuels. He has devised strategies for compliance with clean air and greenhouse gas emissions -- including making contributions to trading mechanisms for SO2, NOx, CO2, and RECs -- and water and waste residuals. For example, he is widely recognized for his work on emissions and renewable energy credit (REC) trading; monetization of clean air, greenhouse gas, environmental and energy credits to facilitate project economics; multi-pollutant control and mitigation strategies; and quantification and monetization of avoided (displaced) emissions.
