Rodney Chong

As Hawaiian Electric's Director of Grid Modernization, Rodney Chong is responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction on all matters related to the implementation of the Hawaiian Electric Companies' grid nodernization Strategy. This multi-year strategy outlines the companies' plan to increase reliability, incorporate more renewable resources and give customers more tools to manage their energy use. The plan focuses on near-term improvements that incorporate a wide range of technologies to enable greater private rooftop solar adoption. In his role, Rodney works closely with project teams and interfaces with groups who are either a part of, or matrixed to, operations in execution of the Grid Modernization Plan.
Rodney began his career in the utility business in 1990 and has held positions in Engineering, Project Management, Environmental, and Renewable Acquisition. Over the past decade Rodney has served in roles that focused on facilitating the utilities' progress to meet the state's 100 percent renewable energy goal.
Rodney is a graduate from the University of Hawaii at Manoa with a B.S. in electrical engineering, a registered professional electrical engineer (PE) in Hawaii, and a certified project management professional (PMP).
